Ravens-Way Locations

Our Outdoor Environmental School & Nature Adventures are focused in Southeastern Arizona, an area much-acclaimed for its Biological Diversity. Specifically, we are located in an area called the “Sky Islands” so named for its lofty, isolated mountain ranges (the islands) which are separated from each other by much drier deserts and grasslands (the seas). The tallest of these mountains top out at 9 - 10,000 feet. Due to the great elevation changes and our warm latitudes, the local habitats provide a wide range of learning and exploring opportunities.
Both the Sonoran and Chihuhuan Deserts have a strong influence the Sky Islands Region, as do the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico and our own Rocky Mountains. The convergence of these major bioregions makes for a spectacular experience on any trip here. Within a relatively small area you’ll travel through diverse deserts, lush grasslands, dense chaparral (shrub lands), oak/pine/juniper forest, tall pines forests, and finally cool spruce/fir forests. Each Environment has its own, unique beauty, which we will be happy to show You.

The Sky Islands, including the famed Chiricahua Mountains, are renowned for their Biological Diversity. Countless plants, many of them useful for Stone-age/Survival Skills, grow in the area. Many of these are more typical of Mexico than of the United States. The Wildlife that you’ll encounter is also spectacular and include many species found no where else in the U.S. 13 species of Hummingbirds, 2 species of Trogons, Roadrunners, and other “Mexican specialty” birds live throughout the Sky islands. Meanwhile, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, Bobcat and even the occasional Jaguar (yes, Jaguar!) roam our Wild lands. Four species of Skunks, Coatis (a relative of the Raccoon), Ringtails, White-tailed and Mule Deer, a plethora of lizards and snakes, and countless beautiful and fascinating invertebrates grace our natural areas. Best of all, we have two species of Ravens (Common and Chihuahuan). Nature here is truly in a class by itself!

At RAVENS-WAY WILD JOURNEYS we have, thus far, managed to protect over 100 Wild Acres from development. Each day we work passionately to create intricate and Resilient Habitats where Native Plants, Birds, Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, and Insects can thrive. Daily We strive to embody good Earth Stewardship Practices, nurturing the Biodiversity of our two Nature Sanctuaries. We know that each species and each facet of Nature - no matter how small - has an important role to play in a healthy Environment !

At RAVENS WAY WILD JOURNEYS We are Earth Stewards committed to a very local approach to Monitoring, Managing, and Documenting Environmental changes at every level. This approach is effective at achieving a nuanced system of WildLife Habitat Conservation, Preservation, and Rehabilitation. We feel that no species is so common that we should take it for granted. Each is an incredible blessing and gift from the Earth that deserves both our attention and respect. Each has something to teach us. With this philosophy in mind, we keep monthly Nature Journals that provide on-going documentation of the short and long-term trends in our Wildlife Populations, Plant Communities, Watershed Health, and Climate data at RAVEN’S NEST and at RAVEN’S MOUNTAIN.
